Keeping A Watchful Eye For Abuse

The teenage years are a difficult period of transition, with many new complications and many new freedoms.  With so many changes occurring during this period of time, it may be difficult for parents to identify when there is something serious going on. But many teenagers are at risk for sexual abuse, whether from their significant other, strangers, or people they know. Understanding the signs to look for can be critical to really protecting your child.

Many of the signs that teenagers will display in cases of abuse are similar to those that present in children who have suffered from sexual abuse.  Parents will want to look for dramatic changes in personality, particularly in regards to sexuality.  While teenagers are naturally discovering their sexuality, any teen that suddenly wants to wear risqué clothing or, conversely, is afraid to wear anything but long sleeve pants and shirts may be sending up a warning flag.  Look for changes in behavior patterns. Is your child suddenly afraid to be touched? Or is he or she suddenly extremely aggressive and attempting to be seductive?

Be certain to maintain an open dialogue with your child and be aware of the people who are in your child's life. This includes internet contacts as well.  Online predators are numerous and teenagers are vulnerable. Be suspicious of expensive or numerous gifts provided by older people.  By keeping your eyes open you will likely be able to spot a problem even among the turbulent times of the teen years.
