Recognizing the Signs of Sexual Abuse

Would you know how to spot signs of sexual abuse? It is not enough to expect that someone will tell another that they are being sexually abused. Telling others about sexual abuse can be extremely hard. There are signs of sexual abuse to be aware of that could help you in recognizing sexual abuse.

Be cautioned, however. The symptoms discussed are alerts for you; they are not conclusive evidence that someone has been sexually abuse. Sexual abuse signs are varied and must be considered in combinations. A single sign taken out of context is not enough to conclude that abuse has or is taking place.
Sexual abuse signs can manifest as a change in behavior such as depression, self harming behaviors, anger, withdrawal, over socialization with strangers, nightmares, loss of confidence, sexual problems, denial, re-experiencing the trauma, inappropriately promiscuous or sexualized behavior, fear or phobias, significant change of appetite or weight, sleeping problems and bed wetting. Keep a keen eye out for physical signs, as well.

Recognizing sexual abuse signs can involve physical manifestations. Torn or blood stained underwear, pain, itching, bruising, redness or swelling, bleeding or discharge from the genitals or anus, sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy, chronic headaches or stomachaches, offensive odors, and urinary track infections are indicators of possible sexual abuse.

Sexual abuse can take place over the internet now too. Be aware of extensive use of the computer, secrecy when on the computer, packages and mail arriving from unknown addresses and requests for a web cam. Sexual abuse is not about sex. It is about control. Sexual abuse is hard to recognize unless there are physical signs of sexual abuse or if someone breaks the silence of the abuse. Know the warning signs.
