My Loved One Was Sexually Abused, What next?

No one likes to talk about sexual abuse. Unfortunately it happens to women, children and even men year after year. It's estimated that there are about 50,000 cases of sexual abuse reported yearly and that number would be even higher if it included the cases that don't get reported.

There are many things that you can do to help support someone who has been sexually abused or assaulted. The first thing is to listen and believe them, especially with children. Make sure that you remain calm and watch your reactions; avoiding disbelief or discipline. Either one can have a very negative impact on the victim in the future.

After listing to what has happened, it is wise to take them to get a physical examination preformed by a professional; if possible within 72 hours of the event happening. Next, getting in contact with police or protection service is strongly advised. Most perpetrators threaten their victims to ensure that their secret isn't reviled. Some aggressive perpetrators will really follow through with their threats so it is important to reassure the victim of their safety to avoid any recanting of their abuse. Lastly, getting in contact with a therapist who specializes in sexual abuse is important. There are many support groups to help the survivor with the day to day struggles of being abused.

Getting sexually abused is a terrible and traumatic event. With the support of family, friends and professionals the person can be a survivor and no longer a victim.
