When trying to evaluate if your child has been sexually abused, dialogue is extremely important. There are physical indicators as well as behavioral indicators that can let you know if your child has been sexually abused. Children who have been sexually abused tend to show changes in their behavior, including signs such as anxiety, mood swings, bedwetting, nightmares, loss of appetite, and inappropriate sexual behavior. Some of the physical signs include urinary tract infections, bruising, bleeding, and possible infection of a sexually transmitted disease, discharge, and odor. These signs individually do not necessarily indicate sexual abuse, but several of these signs found together will and do lead to that conclusion. If your child shows signs of sexual abuse, it is very important to get them to a hospital for examination immediately.
Care after abuse has been confirmed is also very important, if this care is not handled properly, it can cause more damage to the victim than they have already suffered. Therapy is usually necessary to help the victim cope with what has happened to them and help them to have a normal and healthy future. Though this abuse cannot be forgotten, it is possible for the victim to move on. However, this will take work, support, and the love of family and friends. One of the best ways to help a victim cope is by making sure the abuser is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Sometimes this requires the testimony of the victim, but many times it does not. The most important thing to remember is to be as supportive and loving as possible to help the victim through their ordeal and move on.
